RED DRAGON
R.J. Springfield is the Atlanta Chief of Detectives. He is described as being "a burly man in shirtsleeves". He is leading the investigation into the "Tooth Fairy" killing of the Leeds family. He holds a briefing with his detectives which Jack Crawford and Will Graham attend and speak at. He also meets them afterwards in his office. He asks Will about the capture of Hannibal Lecter, and notices the Will is uncomfortable, "Springfield was bluff, not stupid" so he changes the subject. He is impressed by the co-operation the FBI are offering and particularly impressed with Will Graham.
The next day when he is reading through reports of the investigators and when he spots Hoyt Lewis' report he immediately makes contact with Will Graham and asks him to meet up to further investigate this report.

Mr. Spurgen
RED DRAGON
"Spurgen was high priest on the range."
Mr. Spurgen is the chief SWAT instructor at Quantico. He has a "wiry, compact body and his baseball cap tipped back on his head, he looked like an infielder" and he is "short and bandy-legged".
When the FBI decides to trap the "Fairy Tooth" killer by trying to provoke him into attacking Will Graham, Spurgen explains the precautions that the FBI have taken to ensure Graham will not be hurt, they have snipers placed at strategic locations, and they have reduced the wattage on the streetlights to make it harder if the "Fairy Tooth" killer tries to shoot Will from a distance. He advises Will on how to defend himself and asks Will to go to the firing range with him.
He trains Will on the range for two hours, and insists on checking the cylinder crane and cylinder latch screws on Graham's .44 after they've finished firing. "He was relieved to see that Graham did not carry the regulation .38, but he worried about the flash from the ported barrel."

Bob Greer
RED DRAGON
Bob Greer is the alias Hannibal Lecter used when he was trying to obtain Will Graham's home address. He phoned Alan Bloom's office on a Saturday reasoning that his regular secretary wouldn't be there and he would be able to persuade the graduate assistant who was manning the phone to give him the address.
Lecter claimed to be Bob Greer from the Blaine and Edwards Publishing Company who Dr. Bloom had asked to send a copy of Winfred Overholser's The Psychiatrist and the Law to Will Graham. Lecter claimed that Dr. Bloom's regular secretary, Linda Hunt, was supposed to send on the address, but had forgotten to, and rather than get her in trouble could the graduate assistant give him Will Graham's address. To further persuade her, Lecter claimed he had "to catch Federal Express with it in about five minutes, and I hate to bother Dr. Bloom about it at home" and he said: "I'll dance at your wedding if you'll read it to me". He was successful in his ruse.

Francis Dolarhyde aka "The Red Dragon" aka "The Tooth Fairy" Killer aka "Pilgrim"
RED DRAGON
Francis Dolarhyde was born in 1938, his father, Michael Trevane, had left his mother, Marian Dolarhyde, before she gave birth to him. He was born at City Hospital, Springfield, Missouri with a cleft palate and was thus unable to feed in the normal way, but thanks to the intervention of maternity aide Prince Easter Mize he survived. A surgeon at City Hospital preformed an operation to close the clefts in his lip and decided, correctly, that repair of the infant's hard palate should wait until he was five. A local dentist created an obturator; which plugged the baby's palate and permitted him to feed without flooding his nose.
Marian abandoned the boy five days after his birth and he went to the Springfield Foundling Home for a year and a half and then to Morgan Lee Memorial Orphanage. He was not treated well at the orphanage and was there until he was five years old when his grandmother took custody of him.
His grandmother's motivations for adopting the boy were far from altruistic, she used the boy to harass and punish Marian, her daughter. Marian had married a lawyer, Howard Vogt, who was candidate for the state legislature, and her mother brought Francis to Marian's new husband's political rallies and explained who he was and where he came from.
Francis lived with his grandmother for several years, the first year he was there he wet the bed one night because he was afraid to go to the bathroom in the dark, and his grandmother threatened to castrate him with a sowing scissors if he ever did it again.
The cook of the household Queen Mother Bailey was very kind to Francis, and he found solace in her until he was eight years old. At that age he was playing "I'll show you mine, if you show me yours" with a local girl, when a chicken that Queen Mother Bailey had just beheaded with an axe ran around the corner and covered the girl's legs in blood. Queen Mother Bailey calmly told Francis that he needed to do something more suitable for children and that he needed to keep his clothes on. When Francis' grandmother discussed the matter with him, and threatened to castrate him with the sowing scissors again, he assumed that Queen Mother Bailey told her and began to distrust her.
This incident prompted Francis to get an axe and stand by his grandmother's bed to protect her from burglars, he love became so great for her than night. In an effort to be ready to use the axe, he beheaded a chicken that night, and a month later, he wrung another chicken's head off. Increasingly he had developed a form of stockholm syndrome with his grandmother.
His grandmother's health declined to such an extent that she had to be confined to a private nerve sanatorium, and Francis was taken by his mother to live with her and her new family. His was nine years old at this time. He had was given a room at the top of the servants' stairs, and introduced to his twelve year old stepbrother, Ned, and his stepsisters, Victoria and Margaret, who were thirteen nine years old. At the end of his first week living there Ned began to bully him and started by smashing his face into a mirror. After a month of living there, Francis was caught hanging Victoria's cat and was sent away.
In the coming years he continued a pattern of harming and killing pets, and at age seventeen he was caught entering the window of a woman's house for a purpose never established. He was given the choice of enlisting in the Army or facing criminal charges, and took the Army. After basic training he was sent to specialist school in darkroom operation and shipped to San Antonio, where he worked on medical-corps training films at Brooke Army Hospital.
Surgeons at Brooke took a professional interest in Francis and decided to operate on his face. They performed a Z-plasty on his nose, using ear cartilage to lengthen the columella, and repaired his lip with an Abbé flap procedure.
After his service was over, he reenlisted when he was 20 years old and was stationed at Seoul, Korea, developing film from the US Army spotter planes that flew over the thirty-eighth parallel in the late 1950's.
His grandmother was released from the sanatorium when he was 23 years old, and Francis asked for and received a hardship discharge two months before his scheduled separation date and went home to take care of her. He got a job at the Gateway Film Laboratory in St. Louis. Nine years later his grandmother died, and he saw his mother for the last time when she came to the funeral, and although she tried to phone him subsequently, he wouldn't answer her.
Francis worked out all the time and could have competed successfully in a regional body-building competition.
Nine years after his grandmother died when Francis was 40, a change occurred in him. He noticed aging in his hands and a week later he saw an image of William Blake's "The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed [in] Sun". He became obsessed with the image, he carried the picture with him for days, photographed and enlarged it in the darkroom late at night. He posted the painting beside his mirror in the weight room and stared at it while he exercised. He went to Hong Kong for three months and had the dragon from the painting tattooed on his back, and got a set of dentures made that matches his grandmothers exactly. When he returned he began killing.

Queen Mother Bailey
RED DRAGON
Queen Mother Bailey grew up in the service of the Dolarhyde family, and was the cook when Francis Dolarhyde was brought into the household. She was always kind to Francis, "She sometimes brought Francis a plum in her apron pocket, and she called him "Little Possum, always dreamin'" The kitchen was warm and safe" for Francis.
Her husband came to pick her up each night and they would give Francis a ride in their mule-drawn wagon down to the end of the lane, as long as he promised to walk straight back to the house. Francis enjoyed the company and closeness of those wagon rides.
The tenor of their relationship changed when Queen Mother Bailey caught Francis playing "I'll show you mine, if you show me yours" with a local girl, although Queen Mother Bailey was kind to Francis, saying calmly: "Look here, boy, you want to see what's what, well now you see, so go on and find yourselves something else to do. Occupy yourself with children's doings and keep your clothes on", when Francis' grandmother discussed the matter with him, Francis assumed that Queen Mother Bailey told her and began to distrust her.
Soon after she found a couple of chickens that had been killed, but didn't suspect Francis was the killer.
Over a number of years Francis' grandmother began to develop dementia and began to act more domineering towards Queen Mother Bailey, micromanaging the preparation of meals, until one day she slapped Queen Mother Bailey on the face. This was the last straw, Queen Mother Bailey quit her job and contacted Francis' mother, Marian Dolarhyde, to take custody of Francis.

Paul Crane
RED DRAGON
When Francis Dolarhyde goes to the Brooklyn Museum to see the William Blake painting "The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed [in] Sun" he uses the alias "Paul Crane" to cover his tracks.
"Paul Crane" is also the name of the protagonist in the novel 1970 "Red Dragon" by Jerry Pournelle (writing as Wade Curtis) which Dolarhyde may have read.

William Butts
RED DRAGON
When Francis Dolarhyde goes to the Brooklyn Museum to see the William Blake painting "The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed [in] Sun" he claims to museum staff member Paula Harper he wants to see it for research on a paper he is writing. He says it's "a paper on Butts" to which Paula replies "On William Butts?" which he nods to. She then says "I've never read much on him. You only see him in footnotes as a patron of Blake's".
It is worth noting that William Blake's patron was Thomas Butts, not William, and that it appears Paula Harper made a mistake with the name, but Dolarhyde knew she was incorrect (I'm assuming this because he didn't verbally agree with her, he just nodded) but didn't want to correct her because he needed to see the Blake painting as quickly as possible.

Felix Bertl
RED DRAGON
"Dr. Bertl could reproduce a patient's natural teeth exactly and had experimented with various compounds and their effect on resonance."
Dr. Felix Bertl was one of the most renowned dentists in the Midwest who made a set of dentures for Francis Dolarhyde's grandmother. Bertl's teeth were called "Swiss Teeth" since Bertl was Swiss, and were popular with opera singers, actors and others in public life who feared getting dentures might change the tone of their voices.

Sarah is Jack Crawford's secretary. She orders a helicopter to transport Jack to collect the "Tooth Fairy" killer's note from Hannibal Lecter's cell at the Chesapeake State Hospital. She also transcribes dictation of an advertisement to be placed in The National Tattler which turns out to be from Lecter, and telexes it to CIA cryptography section.
She took a call from someone claiming to be "The Pilgrim" (which is Lecter's nickname for the "Tooth Fairy" killer) who was looking for Will Graham. The caller said he'd call again the next afternoon, by which time Sarah's desk had been fitted with a voiceprint spectrograph, tape recorders, and a stress evaluator. Sarah's role was to listen in on the calls and identify the voice of the person who called himself "The Pilgrim" and to signal to Beverly Katz to answer the call.

Rankin and Willingham
RED DRAGON
Rankin and Willingham are the pair of FBI agents who surreptitiously search Hannibal Lecter's cell at the Chesapeake State Hospital once it is discovered that he is in contact with the "Tooth Fairy" killer. They take Polaroids of the cell before they search it, to put everything back in the correct place. Following this they search the hospital trash for the envelope that the "Tooth Fairy" killer used to send his message.
When Lloyd Bowman realizes that the messages between the two serial killers are encrypted using a book code, one that must be based on a book in Lecter's cell, he tells Jack Crawford to instruct Rankin and Willingham to meet him at the Library of Congress with the Polaroids of the cell so that together they can determine the book being used.

Frederick Chilton
Dr. Frederick Chilton is chief of staff at the Chesapeake State Hospital for the Criminally Insane, which houses Hannibal Lecter.
Chilton is clearly jealous of the notoriety that Lecter has achieved and feigns bewilderment at researchers who wish to correspond and interview Lecter. Chilton keeps an EKG tape in his office which shows Lecter's heart activity while he was attacking a nurse. Chilton also has have twelve psychiatric sessions with Lecter where Chilton tried to profile/understand him, but had no success. When Lecter refused to cooperate with the "Tooth Fairy" investigation Chilton removed all of his books and his toilet seat.
Chilton submitted an article to The General Archives that was rejected and the rejection slip was accidentally delivered to Hannibal Lecter.
Chilton practices using his peripheral vision to watch people he is interviewing, and his hands are dry and shiny.
He has known Alan Bloom for years.
"HANNIBAL" (Four years before)
Raul Esparza has been cast as Frederick Chilton in Hannibal.
Michael Trevane
RED DRAGON
Michael Trevane was an Irish musician who married Marian Dolarhyde in Missouri and fathered future serial killer, Francis Dolarhyde. Trevane was an alcoholic who split with Marian before the birth of his son.
Unbeknownst to Trevane his wife managed to get their marriage annulled, with no mention of a child in the annulment proceedings. A few years later when he had sobered up, he called her at work and he told her he had been saved and wanted to know if he, Marian, and the child he "never had the joy of knowing" might make a new life together. Marian told him the child was born dead and she hung up.
Subsequently he showed up drunk at her boardinghouse with his suitcase, and got in a fight with Marian where she revealed the Francis was alive and had been born with a cleft palate and kicked him out of her house and told him never to call again, which he did.
Years later, drunk and brooding over Marian's rich new husband and her fine life, he called Marian's mother and let her know that she had a grandson. A week later a Kansas City streetcar ran down and killer Michael Trevane.
"HANNIBAL" (Four years before)
Since Michael Trevane is only tied to the Francis Dolarhyde case, it is unlike he will appear before Season 4.

Cesare G. Tedeschi
RED DRAGON
Cesare George Tedeschi is the real-world editor of a three-volume series of Forensic Medicine books. Both Will Graham and Brian Zeller agree that although Graham's own monograph on determining time of death by insect activity is the standard reference, it is less useful than a monograph by Mant and Nuorteva contained in the Forensic Medicine book series which have more pictures and a table of invasion waves.

Lloyd Bowman
RED DRAGON
"Lloyd Bowman, dry as a document in spite of the heat"
Lloyd Bowman works in the Documents section, he is very good at his job, and like Beverly Katz he seems to have a somewhat bantering relationship with Jack Crawford, when examining a note found in Hannibal Lecter's cell, he says to Crawford "I congratulate you on your hairstyle. A brave departure" since Jack's hair has become disheveled from a helicopter trip.
"His voice was surprisingly deep for his slight stature, and his bow tie moved slightly when he talked." He wears rimless spectacles and is known to be very quick at analyzing and decrypting messages. He never served in the Marines.
As befits a bow tie wearer, Lloyd seems to have had a classical education, for example, when discussing the feeling of success with Will Graham he says: "You know, when his theorem rang the cherries, Pythagoras gave one hundred oxen to the Muse".
When examining difficult documents, he chants under his breath "You're so sly, but so am I".
For the previous two years he has been on the trail of "paper hanger Nilton Eskew and his sweetheart, Nan" who were making their own traveler's checks on a color Xerox. By the time the "Tooth Fairy" case started the pair have been caught and Lloyd is going to testify at their trial.
When the "Tooth Fairy" sends the FBI a tape of Freddy Lounds, after analyzing it Bowman sent the following encouraging memo to Graham:

Voiceprints verify this is Lounds. Obviously he was repeating dictation. It's a new tape, manufactured in the last three months and never used before. Behavioral Science is picking at the content. Dr. Bloom should hear it when he's well enough - you decide about that.
Clearly the killer's trying to rattle you.
He'll do that once too often, I think.

Reverend S. B. Lomax aka "Brother Buddy"
RED DRAGON
Reverend S. B. Lomax was the head of the Morgan Lee Memorial Orphanage when Francis Dolarhyde was placed in care there at age about a year and a half. Brother Buddy called the other boys and girls together and told them that Francis was a harelip but they must be careful never to call him a harelip. He suggested they pray for him.
About three years later Dolarhyde's Grandmother came to the orphanage and took custody of Francis with Brother Buddy's permission.
Dolarhyde's Grandmother threatened Francis that she would send him back to Brother Buddy's orphanage when she felt he misbehaved. The Dragon also threatened Francis that if the FBI caught him: "YOU KNOW THEY'LL SEND YOU TO A PLACE WORSE THAN BROTHER BUDDY'S".

Garrett Jacob Hobbs aka "Minnesota Shrike"
RED DRAGON
"Garrett Hobbs was insane"
For eight months Hobbs (the "Minnesota Shrike") caused terror in Minneapolis by attacking college girls and killing them with a knife. He left a little curly piece of metal in the clothes one of the girls he attacked and this led Will Graham to investigate steamfitters and plumbers until he came across a construction job where Hobbs had left a resignation letter that Graham felt was peculiar and worth investigating.
Graham came to Hobbs's apartment house with a uniformed police officer. Hobbs saw them coming and murdered his own wife by stabbing her several times and threw her body down the stairs to delay the investigators. He then attacked his own daughter and cut her in the neck with his knife, he succeeded in cutting through her windpipe, but not her arteries before Will Graham shot him. Hobbs died sitting on the floor crying "See? See?" to his daughter.
Hobb's daughter recovered from her wounds.
"HANNIBAL" (Four years before)
Bryan Fuller says "We know from the book that Will Graham was psychologically incapacitated when he captured a serial killer known as the Minnesota Shrike, Garrett Jacob Hobbs. That’s all we knew. So we got to craft what kind of killer Garrett Jacob Hobbs was, how that would have the impact on Will Graham and how that would bring Hannibal Lecter into the story in an organic way."

Sharon (Hair and Fiber)
RED DRAGON
Sharon is one of Beverly Katz's staff and works in the Hair and Fiber section. During the "Tooth Fairy" case she identified the type of toilet paper that the "Tooth Fairy" used to write to Hannibal Lecter. "It's toilet tissue for marine heads and motor homes. The texture matches brand name Wedeker manufactured in Minneapolis. It has nationwide distribution."

Dr. Heimlich
RED DRAGON
Dr. Heimlich is forensic psychologist based at the Psychology Department of Harvard University. He is highly regarded by Will Graham.
Heimlich works with the FBI on serial killer cases, and reviews the "Tooth Fairy" casefiles. Neither he nor Dr. Bloom think that the "Tooth Fairy" is suicidal based on their profiling of him.

Molly Foster Graham
RED DRAGON
"Molly's a sucker for strays."
Molly Foster Graham is Will Graham's wife. She is the same height as Will, five feet ten inches. She runs a dress shop and has a "good ramshackle house on Sugarloaf Key" (an island in the lower Florida Keys). She is very protective of Will and doesn't like Jack Crawford.
Molly was married once before Will to a baseball player who she met on the school bus and married in college. "They trooped around the Florida State League while he was in the Cardinals' farm system. They took Willy with them and had a terrific time. Spam and spirit. He got a tryout with the Cardinals and hit safely in his first two games". This was five years ago, but he developed cancer and died within five months. Molly watches baseball when she was upset. After her husband died she moved to Oregon for a while (where her in-laws live) and never again referred to her first husband by any name other than "Willy's father".
As a result of her experiences she has a ceaseless vigilance for lumps, she insists on quarterly medical checkups for Will and Willy, she has a fear of the dark; and she has hard-bought knowledge that time is luck.
She met Will a year after he was stabbed by Dr. Lecter, about two years ago.
Musically Molly likes "Whiskey River" by Johnny Bush and "Black Mountain Rag" by Doc Watson and Merle Watson. She also knows how to clog dance.
"HANNIBAL" (Four years before)
In Season one of "Hannibal" Molly's husband died the previous year. Molly has not yet met Will Graham. She will meet him a year after Hannibal very nearly killed him (this could be sometime in Season Two).
